WORKSHOPS
College Essays 101: Getting Started on Your Personal Statement
For many students, college application essays can be challenging and overwhelming. What prompt or topic will inspire their best writing? What topics allow them to showcase their unique personality and background? How can they make sure their personal statement is doing its job in the context of their applications?
In this workshop, students will:
learn about the purpose of the personal statement and how it differs from most writing they’ve done in school
review the Common App prompts (including the free response option) to determine which prompt might best fit their own personal statement
complete guided activities to brainstorm potential topics
discuss trends and mistakes that are often seen in students’ essays
receive feedback on their initial brainstorming
This workshop focuses on essay content. Students will develop an understanding of how to approach their personal statement and identify topics that they can further explore in their independent writing moving forward.
This workshop is for students only and is designed for rising seniors. Students must bring a laptop.

College Research 101: Thinking Beyond Size and Location (Friday PM)
When it comes to colleges, there’s a lot of factors to consider beyond just size and location. Will access to professors help you learn? Does a competitive academic environment motivate you to work harder or does it stress you? How do you feel about sororities and fraternities on campus? Always imagined attending a college with big-time sports? And once you’ve thought about factors like these…how do you get started researching it all?
In this workshop, students will:
learn about a range of academic, social, and cultural characteristics of colleges
complete a guided activity to identify individual preferences
reflect on factors that are important (and not) for them personally
discuss WHAT to research and HOW to research
Students will be able to use all research tools after the workshop, too!
This workshop is for students only and is designed for rising juniors (class of 2023) and rising seniors. Students must bring a laptop.
